My great-grandmother immigrated from Haapajärvi, Finland in the late 1800's, and settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts. My goal is to reinvent the recipes that I've gathered from the old Finnish community.
My name is Karen and I have always been intrigued by food and cooking. I clearly remember my grandmother baking all the time -- not necessarily Finnish specialties, but delicious cookies, cakes and pies. She almost certainly learned how to cook from my Finnish great-grandmother.
As I read through the recipes in the old Lanesville church cookbooks, it struck me that these foods may get lost somewhere in history. There is a lot of knowledge that is assumed in many of them. I want to preserve the recipes, update them, and use them as a way to explore my Finnish ancestry.
